Mt. Vernon UMC was built in 1906 in the Maces Springs area of Hiltons, VA. The white clapboard country church was constructed from trees dragged out of the local Clinch Mountain to the north. The church overlooks to the south a farm. The route was near a railroad line, which has been removed, that was the primary mode of transportation in and out of the area in the early 1900s.

The building and grounds are well maintained, thus a delight to see.

Several members of The Carter Family, an early country music group, are buried here. A remix of Johnny Cash's 1996 "Unchained" spiritual was recorded inside the church.
