Alvin Pleasant Carter, known as A.P. or Doc, formed the Carter Family band in 1927, which became the first vocal group to become country music stars. Their signature recordings include "Will the Circle Be Unbroken", "Wildwood Flower", and "Keep On the Sunny Side" which continue as country music standards. A.P.'s headstone features a 45 record inscribed with the last song title.

The cemetery is at Mt. Vernon UMC is a which is a white clapboard church invoking country memories.
Description:
In 1970, A. P. Carter was inducted into the Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame. In 1993, a 29-cent U.S. postage stamp was issued honoring the Carter Family with images of A.P., Sara, and Maybelle. (Part of a set of four with Patsy Cline, Hank Williams, and Bob Wills.) In 2001, the group was inducted posthumously into the International Bluegrass Music Hall of Honor. In 2005, the Carters received the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award.
