This memorial is to remember William Crossing.
William Crossing (1847 - 1928) was a writer and documenter of Dartmoor and Dartmoor life. He lived successively at South Brent, Brentor and at Mary Tavy but died at Plymouth.

The plaque was placed on the rock in 1938 by Dr J. Malim, H. Franks and members of the old walking club, Dobson's Moormen.
The plaque says:

To all lovers of the moor.
