The
Moss Beach Distillery is well known for its trio of tragic, but romantic ghosts. Recently the popular NBC TV Series, "Unsolved Mysteries" recreated a haunting version of the "The Legend of the Blue Lady".
According to the story as told in the Distillery Times, some 80 years ago, a beautiful young woman met by chance, a handsome, dangerous man and fell passionately in love with him. This sophisticated ladies' man was a piano player in the local bar. The naive young woman, always dressed in blue, was already married to another, but her unsuspecting husband never knew of the illicit affair.
Tragedy struck during a terrible November storm. The beautiful lady in blue, planning to meet her lover later that week at their favorite spot, died in a horrific automobile accident. It is here you will find her, dressed in blue, wandering aimlessly along the beach, searching hopelessly for him.
The story of the remaining two tragic deaths and recounts of additional hauntings are best read at the
Moss Beach Distillery Hauntings web site.
Built by Frank Torres in 1927, “Frank’s” (now The Moss Beach Distillery) became a popular nightspot for silent film stars and politicians from the City. Mystery writer Dashiell Hammett frequented the place and used it as a setting for one of his detective stories.
They open at noon every day, except Sunday at 11 AM when they offer a Sunday Champagne brunch, a tradition with the locals. Some of the awards they've won are best place for a cocktail, best seafood on the coastside, best place for a business lunch, most romantic restaurant, and best place to take visiting relatives. I found the food and views to be excellent.
