The Mason Street School, built in 1865, was the first public schoolhouse in San Diego County. It is a California State Landmark and a Museum located within San Diego's Old Town State Historic Park.
It is free and open Tues, Thurs, Fri & Sat from 10-1 and on Wed and Sun 10-4. Closed Mondays.
This building was relocated twice. The last time was in 1955.
The first teacher earned $65 per month - which seems like a ginormous salary for 1865. She quit after 11 months to marry the president of the School Board.
