While most visitors to this park come for the water, the park was actually created to preserve the last remaining section of the Youghiogheny Forest. Park visitors continue to enjoy this camp spot for friends Henry Ford, Thomas Edison, and Harvey Firestone. A trip here can include a quiet walk through woods with hemlocks and white pines that are over 300 years old, play time in Muddy Creek, and a visit to scenic Swallow Falls.
The park is located nine miles from the nearest town of Oakland, Maryland. The day use section of the park is very popular during the weekends. Trails are dirt paths and rocks with some wooden structures near high erosion areas. There are wooden steps beside the waterfalls. The width of the falls will vary significantly based on recent rainfall. The park size is 257 acres.
PLEASE NOTE: pets are NOT permitted in the park from Memorial Day through Labor Day.
Maryland State Parks are pack-in and pack-out sites. No trash cans are available so be prepared to remove all trash.
