The Bohemian Uplands (Ceské stredohorí) are cut in half by the Elbe river (Labe in Czech) which has created an picturesque 4 km long valley known from medieval era as the Porta Bohemica (Bohemian Gate / Brána Cech). The miracle of the Porta Bohemica formation occurred in the Tertiary, by rocks being lifted across the original flow and in the early Quaternary, when the river had to cut its way through again. As a result, remarkable countryside with deep cuts into the Bohemian Uplands was formed.
The volcanic origin of other mountains has given them their characteristic appearance of mounds (Ríp) or cones (Milešovka). There are many interesting geological formations there, such as lava streams, debris fields on the mountain slopes, pentagonal and hexagonal separated basalt columns, deep valleys and waterfalls.
