Christchurch is a city built around a cathedral with a spire that once commanded the skyline.
The cornerstone was laid on 16 December 1864, but financial problems in the fledgling city saw its completion delayed between 1865 and 1873. The nave and tower were consecrated by 1881, though the entire building was not finished until 1904.
For a small charge you can climb the Cathedral Tower and see the amazing views of the central city and Port Hills. The tower is 36 metres high and the spire 27 metres, making it 63 metres from ground level to the cross at the top.
