Originally built as a fortress for the Welsh Princes of Powys c. 1200 then remodelled over more than 400 years reflecting the changing needs and ambitions of the Herbert family.

Magnificent collections of paintings, sculptures and tapestries amongst the many treasures housed here. In addition there is a fascinating collection from India housed in the Clive Museum. Edward, son of Robert Clive, the conqueror of India, married Henrietta Herbert in 1784, uniting the Clive and Powis Estates.

The world-famous garden, influenced by Italian and French styles, retains it's original lead statues, an orangery and an aviary on the terraces.
