I found this one on the way over to talk to the Fulton County Historian. I couldn't believe how many times I've driven by this place and didn't notice the cannon and the Sammon's Family war monument. The cannon is a 100 pounder. This cannon is located in the Sammons Family Plot. I believe the property is private and the parking here is poor so I'd advise getting your pic(s) from the road and head on into Johnstown for some more waymarks.
This is information that I got from the Fulton County Historian. The cannon use to be owned by a member of the Starin family. A prominent family from Fultonville with some early war history. After the war Mr. Starin's worker/servant (relationship is unclear) was asked to fire the cannon a few times for the fourth of July. The worker did as asked and after a few shots he swabbed out the cannon and was placing another charge when a remnant coal ignited the charge and the man was killed.
I'm hoping to find the newspaper article on this one to add to the listing. After the man's death the cannon was sealed and placed on permanent display in the Sammons Plot. The
Col. Simeon Sammons
monument is quite beautiful and worth checking out as well. all of the information from the monument is on this page so there is no need to get any close ups. Happy Waymarking, Swizzle & Family
