St Joseph's Church in Midland, Maryland, is one of the six Churches of Western Allegany and Northern Garrett Counties that share worship and service in western Maryland.
The modern church built in 1967 replaces an earlier larger church built when the town of Midland reached its economic height. A picture of the previous church building can be found on page 128 at this link: http://tinyurl.com/y9xntku
The parish was a mission church of Lonaconing until 1898 when Rev. Don Luigi Sartoris became the first resident pastor. Rev. Sartoris, son of an Italian nobleman and diplomat, was a notable figure in the Diocese of Baltimore, founding several parishes and later serving as a representative of Baltimore's Cardinal Gibbons.
While the local coal mining industry thrived, St Joseph's sponsored a school and many service organizations and was a center of Midland community life. As the coal industry faded, Midland saw a similar downscaling. St Joseph's remains a small but active parish.
The bells of the original church have been preserved and are mounted in the church yard where they are rung daily and signal the start of church services. They are waymarked here: http://www.waymarking.com/waymarks/WM7CE6
