The Beacon Hill District is one of the oldest sections of Boston, going back to colonial times. The section of Beacon Street extending west from the State House is replete with historic names like Longfellow, and Webster. Most of these are finely preserved and still in use. Some, like the Caflin building have been modernized, but many still have the original interiors of finely carved appointments capturing the years of history centered here.

Even though the Massachusetts Statehouse has a separate listing as building on the National Register, it is the most striking structure within this district, and the coordinates are taken here. Across the Robert Gould Shaw Memorial, by renowned sculptor Augustus St. Gauden, which is a contributing object.
