A Carnegie grant of $15,500 was received in Shawnee, Indian Territory, in 1904. Contractor A.O. Campbell of Oklahoma City, who also built the Ardmore Carnegie library, was hired. The library was built on the south side of Woodland Park, a popular meeting area in town. According to the north face of the cornerstone, the building is "Dedicated to the advancement, pleasure & elevation of all mankind." The building originally featured a dome, but a 1927 fire damaged the dome and roof. The dome was removed, repairs were made, and the library was reopened in 1930. At some point, an addition was built in the back. Next door, to the south, the Pottawatomie County Courthouse was built in 1934. The library was relocated in 1989, and renovations took place in 1992. Currently, the Carnegie building is used as the Pottawatomie County District Attorney's Office; it has also been the home of the County Law Library.
