At the Dunsdale Recreation Reserve you'll find a large grassy field with longdrops (toilets), drinking water facet, and a handful of picnic tables available. You can stay here for two or three nights depending on which information you use. Suggest calling 0800 732 732 for details.
The Dunsdale Recreation Reserve was originally set aside as part of a proposed watershed supply for Invercargill. When this did not happen the valley was opened up to recreation and is jointly administered by Southland District Council and the Department of Conservation. There is an hour long loop Forks Flat walking track that follows the creek. (

Also, you may want to call the council in advance as there is now a locked gate at the entrance to prevent vandalism at this out of the way location.
Accessing the site can be a bit tricky. Take SH 96 from either Winton or Mataura to Dunsdale Valley Road and begin following the 'Picnic Site' arrows. However, as you enter into the Hokonui Forest there is a chance the signs have been removed.
This is one of 10 freedom camping opportunities provided by Southland District Council. (
