Wine is a new interest for us. Last week, while vacationing in Geneva On The Lake, Ohio, we were confronted with a huge selection of local wineries. We asked at our hotel for a recommendation for a winery that is not too snooty for beginners. They highly recommended the newest winery in the area, the Winery at Spring Hill.
The Winery At Spring Hill was previously an orchard and fruit stand. This new winery opened in March of 2009 and features a tasting bar, dining, entertainment, coffee bar, cheese and breads, and a gift shop with wine flavored jelly. See the attached photos (downloaded from Spring Hill's web site).
This was our first (well to be honest to date, our only) wine tasting adventure, and we approached the winery with some trepidation. It was mid-afternoon and the place was empty. We stepped up to the tasting bar and asked the server for a recommendation. He asked us, "Well what wine do you like?" We replied "White Zinfandel." He didn't laugh. He then stated that we should try their Raspberry Wine and Covered Bridge Blush. We tried both and loved them. The Navigator then pipes up and asks for a taste of Merlot. Interesting flavor, but The Navigator is too much of a rube to know if it was good. Being new to the sport, we limited ourselves to three samples. Somebody has to drive the car and neither of us are accustomed to alcohol.
We bought a bottle of the Raspberry and the Blush but passed on the Merlot. The server told us that their fruit wines are true wines made from the fruit not flavored grape wines.
Spring Hill offers the following wines.
Three "Covered Bridge" blends: Blush, Pink Catawba, and Red. These are made from Lake Erie Labrusca grapes. (Labrusca? Turns out to be a semi-snooty term for Concorde!)
Five genuine fruit wines: Raspberry, Cherry, Blackberry, Apple, and Peach.
Six premium wines: Vidal Blanc, Merlot, Reisling, Chardonnay, Chambourcin, Cabernet Sauvignon.
So how do we rate Spring Hill? With the caveat that we are rubes, excellent, 5 stars. Lovely atmosphere, friendly staff, zero snootiness!
