General John Biddle, attended the United States Military Academy, graduating 2nd in the Class of 1881. He was commissioned as an engineer and during his career he was placed in charge of the rivers and harbors in such locations as Nashville, Tennessee and San Francisco, California. He was awarded the Silver Star during the Spanish – American War while serving in Puerto Rico. While serving as Public Works Commissioner in Washington, D. C., Biddle oversaw a number of projects including the design and building of the New Union Station. General Biddle served as Superintendent of the United States Military Academy from 1916 – 1917 and in 1918 he served as Army Chief of Staff. General Biddle died on January 18, 1936 and is resting at the United States Military Academy Cemetery in West Point, New York.

Description:
John Biddle was born in Detroit, Michigan on February 2, 1859. He attended the United States Military Academy, graduating in 1881. Biddle was commissioned an engineer and was in charge of the river and harbor works in Nashville, Tennessee from 1891 – 1898. He served as Chief Engineer of Volunteers during the Spanish – American War serving in Puerto Rico, Cuba and the Philippines where he was awarded the Silver Star. Following the Spanish – American War Biddle served as the Engineer Commissioner in charge of public work for Washington, D.C. from 1901 – 1907. After leaving Washington in 1907 he was in charge of rivers and harbors in San Francisco from 1907 through 1911. During the early days of World War I, Biddle served as an observer with the Austro-Hungarian Army before serving as Superintendent of the U.S. Military academy from 1916 – 1917. General Biddle also served as the United States Army Chief of Staff in 1918. General John Biddle died on January 18, 1936 at Fort Sam Houston, Texas. He is buried in the United States Military Academy Cemetery in West Point, New York.
