Toktogul Satylganov performed lyrical songs and lambasted manaps with lyrics such as these verses from his popular poem "Five Boars":
Five manaps are from wolf breed,
They oppresssed people.
They forced people
To cry, becasue of you, wolves,
You have taken my last horse.
In 1898, Toktogul was arrested by the Tsar's authorities as a result of manaps taking their revenge. He was sentenced to hard labor in Siberia. He made two unsuccessful escape attempts and his term was increased to 25 years.
12 years later, with the help of Russian settlers, Toktogul finally fled Siberia, and spent two more years wandering before reaching his native country of Kirghizia. Toktogul became the founder of democratic Kyrgyz literature, and went on to create a large number of lyrical and didactic poems, which remain popular among the Krygyz nation.
