CITY PARK, north of City Park Lake, and through which Dalrymple Drive and its continuation, Park Boulevard, wind, is a landscaped area containing a small zoo, a golf course, tennis courts, a swimming pool and a merry-go-round, which in winter is used as a skating rink. At the northern entrance to the park is a Spanish-American War Memorial, a formalized concrete representation of a ship's prow, in which is imbedded the figurehead of the former U.S.S. Louisiana. The brass medallion, emblazoned with the seal of the United States, was presented to the State in 1910. - Louisiana: A Guide to the State, 1941, Baton Rouge section, pg 266.
The park is popular park with 1.7 miles of walking trails, tennis courts, golf course, dog park and other recreational facilities. The zoo and merry-go-round do not exist. The golf course is listed on the National Register of Historic places. The Spanish-American War Memorial exists as described.
