Bernard Ford Aris (1887 - 1977) was born in England and arrived in New Zealand with his family in 1890. After serving in WWI, he settled in New Plymouth in 1922. He produced woodcuts and etchings, painted in oil and watercolour and also worked in pen and ink. His work depicted the sea, ships, and landscapes. He lived in New Plymouth and was a prolific painter, making over 600 sketches and watercolours of Mt Egmont. Mt Taranaki (Mt Egmont) was a favourite subject. He worked as a farmer, bushwhacker, ship radio operator and bank clerk. He died in New Plymouth.
