Dewey, along with his brothers (Rodney, Will, Burkeman and Harry) were known as the Balfa Brothers (Les Frères Balfa). They were sharecropper son's and learned of cajun music from their father, family and friends. They were invited to the Newport Folk Music Festival in 1964 and from that performance, the revival Cajun culture begun. Brothers Will and Rodney were killed together in an automobile collision in 1979. The group "broke up" as it was, but Dewey went on to continue promoting Cajun Music until his death. His legacy lives as his daughter has a wonderful cajun band "Balfa Toujours".
