An inscription on the plaque of a tree near the State House of 1676 reads:

THIS TREE PLANTED
IN HONOR OF
MATILDA PHILLIPS BADGER
ORGANIZING GOVERNOR
THE MARYLAND BRANCH
SONS AND DAUGHTERS
OF THE PILGRIMS
MARCH 1941

Little is known about the personal life of Matilda Phillips Badger other than what is inscribed on the plaque. The Sons and Daughters of the Pilgrims is a national society dedicated to the memory of the Pilgrims. Members must be direct descendants of a Pilgrim or immigrant who settled before 1700 in the territory of what is now the lower 48 states of the USA.
