This 20-foot granite and marble monument is located on Meetinghouse Hill, in Rev. James K. Allen Park, directly in front of First Parish Church, Boston's first meetinghouse.

(Roundel on front of obelisk, in raised lettering:) IN HONOR OF THE CITIZEN & SOLDIERS/OF DORCHESTER WHO FOUGHT/IN THE WAR OF THE/REBELLION/1861---1865 (Roundel on rear of obelisk, incised lettering:) THEY DIED THAT THE/NATION MIGHT LIVE. unsigned

A tall granite obelisk adorned with a band of stars and a band of shields. The middle section of monument contains four marble roundels, one on each side of the obelisk. One roundel contains a relief of a cannon and another roundel contain a relief of the Dorchester Seal. The lower section of monument is inscribed with the names of war dead. The monument is surrounded by a wrought iron fence.
