Harvey Milk Plaza is named in memory of San Francisco Supervisor Harvey Milk, the first openly gay person elected to office in the US. He was assassinated in 1978, a year after his election, along with the Mayor George Moscone, by a disgruntled fellow supervisor, Dan White.
The plaza itself is currently a sunken entry to the MUNI Subway station, accessed by stairs from Castro Street, with a terrace to the south. A plaque with information on Harvey Milk is mounted on one of the columns. In 1998 a large rainbow flag was added to the plaza, which is visible from miles away. A plaque lists all the openly gay or lesbian elected officials in San Francisco at the time of the flag's installation.
In 2000, an international design competition was held for ideas for a larger Harvey Milk Plaza that would encompass the entire intersection of Castro and Market Streets. Over one hundred designs were submitted. The winning design for Harvey Milk Plaza was submitted by Heidi Sokolowsky.
