The Parish of St. Joseph was founded in 1792 and has played an integral role in the history of Baton Rouge. The current Gothic Revival styled church building was constructed in 1853. The building has had several renovations over the years including addition of the soaring spire with iron cross in 1891. The church was elevated to the rank of Cathedral in 1961. After a renovation in 1967 the church was consecrated as a Cathedral in 1970. The building was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1990.
