When the British Penal Colony at Port Arthur closed in 1877, James Price from Staffordshire, England bought land here and built this (and another) kiln. Price made salt glazed and unglazed earthenware and other items. The kiln fell into disuse after Price's death in 1912, and collapsed sometime after 1932. It was restored in 1982.
