South of the Border is, of course, one of the places every traveler must stop at least once while wandering around the country. This oasis of commerce in the country consists of t-shirt shops, miniature golf, lodging, restaurants, ice cream stands, a sombrero lookout tower and other structures which glow of neon in the night.
Visible even from the highway are the 97-foot 'Big Man' which holds a neon 'S.O.B.' sign and the 'Sombrero Tower' which serves as a 200-foot lookout tower so one can survey the gleaming city of commerce below.
The excitement begins from almost 200 miles away from either direction along I-95 as signs begin promoting your inevitable visit (especially if kids are in the car). If you arrive at night (recommended) you'll see a gleaming island of neon reminiscent of the Las Vegas Strip before you even leave the interstate!
The idea for South of the Border materialized due to it's location on the 'opposite' side of the North Carolina border. The enterprise began as a beer stand owned by Alan Schafer - south of the 'dry' counties in NC. He ran with the border concept & added restaurants, rooms, shops, etc. - eventually creating a small 'town' ...and one of the must-see 'tourist traps' in the U.S.
