The Watchman was given its name in 1886 by the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS). A watch was set up here while the lake was being surveyed.
Another orientation table is across the observation deck to the south.

The lookout tower on The Watchmen was built in 1932. This orientation board gives view to the north and east.
Grand views include Hillman Peak, Llao Rock, Cleetwood Cove, and the peaks of Mt Scott, Baily and Thielsen.
