Napier Historic Prison is situated in sunny Hawkes Bay, on Napier's Bluff Hill overlooking the Pacific Ocean and the beautiful Centennial Gardens. Built on the location of the old quarry, inmates used to break out stone to build the walls that would keep them imprisoned. They also built the gardens opposite.
There are day and night tours available, the tour guide entertains you with all sorts of tales about life in the prison which opened late 1800s and was working up till 1993, then and now. It is apparently haunted, with plenty of people having tales to tell.
Part of the prison has been converted to a Backpackers, with very basic rooms like cells, for those that want to experience a night in the prison.
