The Give Something Back Foundation (GSBF), in conjunction with the Will County Historical Society, developed the park in downtown Lockport as a vehicle to educate visitors on the history of President Abraham Lincoln and his connection with the I&M Canal and the city of Lockport.

The I&M Canal opened in 1848, and Lockport served as its headquarters. The waterway, which was much broader then, connected the Illinois and Mississippi rivers to the Great Lakes and Erie Canal, creating a transportation route spanning from the Gulf of Mexico to the Atlantic Ocean.

In order to give visitors a view of the site's history, the park includes 15 medallions that are installed in the park's walkways. Five of the large metal discs tell stories about Abraham Lincoln, and 10 discs tell the story of Lockport and the canal by showcasing key figures in the canal's past and present.

It also includes a sculpture depicting Lincoln in three poses, revealing his humanity and charm as frontiersman and simultaneously, stoic political figure and emancipator. The sculpture sits on the Illinois & Michigan Canal's wall, precisely where the wall stood in the 1860's.
