The standard route is from the Kite Lake Trailhead. Drive 6 miles north on Colorado Highway 9 from the Colorado Highway 9-U.S. Highway 285 junction in Fairplay, Colorado. Turn west onto Park County Road 8 (AKA: Kite Lake Road) in Alma, Colorado. Follow this dirt road six miles to Kite Lake. The last mile of this road is deeply rutted and difficult for most 2wd vehicles. It is possible to park along the road or at a parking lot near the lake. A fee is required to park in this lot. There is a well worn trail from here north up to a 13,380 foot saddle between Mt. Democrat and Mt. Cameron. From here it is a 0.5 mile hike up to the summit. The hike is two miles one way and several old mines are passed along the way. Many people will combine this hike with the summits of nearby Mts. Lincoln and Bross.
