This mark was part of the Eastern Oblique Arc - which was a triangulation of the eastern United States extending from Calais, Maine to New Orleans, Louisiana that took place from 1833 to 1898. for more info see the following - (visit link) - details of the search are here - (visit link)

The original mark (an earthenware cone) was covered and a standard disk was placed on top of a concrete monument.

Note - the station is located on county government property & permission is required to wisit the site.

STATION DESCRIPTION

DESCRIBED BY COAST AND GEODETIC SURVEY 1896 (ADB)
ON A HILL (BUT NOT ON ITS HIGHEST PART), ABOUT 2-1/2 MILES BY ROAD E OF ODENTON (JUNCTION), ON LAND BELONGING (IN 1896) TO JAMES WOODWARD, AND ABOUT 1/4 MILE N OF THE OLD WEBB HOME SITE. THE OLD WEBB HOUSE HAS BEEN REPLACED BY A NEW ONE ON THE SAME SPOT.
STATION WAS MARKED BY AN EARTHENWARE CONE 1.7 FEET BELOW THE SURFACE OF THE GROUND. ABOVE THIS IS A GRANITE BLOCK 7 INCHES SQUARE AND 5 INCHES THICK, WITH A HOLE IN ITS UPPER SURFACE, 1.1 FEET BELOW THE SURFACE. AND ABOVE THIS WAS SET THE SURFACE MARK, A ROUGH GRANITE BLOCK 1.2 FEET LONG, WITH ITS TOP DRESSED TO A 4-INCH SQUARE, AND HAVING CUT THEREON TWO SHALLOW CROSS LINES TO MARK THE CENTER. THREE OTHER STONE PILLARS, EACH 2 FEET 2 INCHES LONG, AND 5 INCHES SQUARE ON TOP, WITH CROSS LINES CUT IN THEIR TOPS, WERE SET AS REFERENCE MARKS TO THE N, E, AND S OF THE STATION, AND EACH 5 FEET THEREFROM. OTHER WITNESS MARKS ESTABLISHED IN 1848 WERE AS FOLLOWS--A CEDAR STUMP 114 FEET FROM THE STATION S 85 DEG 10 MIN E. A CEDAR TREE 106 FOOT FROM THE STATION N 20 DEG E. THE DISTANCES WERE MEASURED ALONG SURFACE OF THE GROUND. A POINT ON THE LINE BETWEEN TRIANGULATION STATIONS SOPER AND LINSTID WAS MARKED BY A BOTTLE BURIED BETWEEN TWO CEDAR POSTS AND 5 FEET FROM EACH. IT WAS IN THE ROAD LEADING FROM THE GATE, AND 209.7 FEET DISTANT.

STATION MARK A CONE BURIED 1.7 FEET UNDERGROUND AND STONE 7 INCHES SQUARE WITH A HOLE IN CENTER AND 5 INCHES THICK WAS SET OVER CONE. ABOVE THIS A GRANITE POST 5 INCHES SQUARE AND 1.2 FEET LONG WAS FOUND. REFERENCES AS FOLLOWS--

N REFERENCE A SQUARE STONE 5 BY 5 INCHES TOP JUST BELOW GROUND SURFACE - 5.1 FEET FROM STATION.

E REFERENCE A SQUARE STONE 5 BY 5 INCHES TOP 3 INCHES BELOW GROUND SURFACE - 5.1 FEET FROM STATION.

S REFERENCE A SQUARE STONE 5 BY 5 INCHES TOP 2 INCHES BELOW GROUND SURFACE - 5.0 FEET FROM STATION.

AN ADDITIONAL REFERENCE MARK WAS FOUND AS FOLLOWS--A 1-INCH GALVANIZED PIPE IN GROUND E OF N REFERENCE, 5.65 FEET, NE OF CENTER MARK, 7.6 FEET.

TO REACH THIS POINT, GO TO MILLERSVILLE ON HIGHWAY NO. 3, TURN N ON HIGHWAY FROM MILLERSVILLE TO ODENTON, GO NW 1.2 MILES TO NAVEL ACADEMY DAIRY FARM, CONTINUE NW AND GO 1.2 MILES NW OF DAIRY FARM TURN RIGHT ON DIRT ROAD, GO 0.1 MILE TO SAPPINGTON RAILROAD STATION ON ANNAPOLIS ELECTRIC RAILROAD CROSS RAILROAD TURN RIGHT, GO S PARALLEL TO RAILROAD 0.1 MILE, TURN LEFT, GO 0.5 MILE TO HOME OF MR. ELKA (2 BIRD HOUSES ON POLES IN YARD), TURN LEFT, GO 0.3 MILE PASS YELLOW HOUSE ON LEFT, VACANT HOUSE ON RIGHT, TURN RIGHT ON SLANTING DIRT ROAD, CROSS SAND ROAD, GO 0.1 MILE TO WOODS ROAD FORK, TRIANGLE ON OAK TREE TO RIGHT, TAKE LEFT FORK, GO 0.1 MILE ON BOOTLEGGERS ROAD (LOCAL NAME) TO PINE TREE BLAZED ON 3 SIDES CROSS NAILED ON TREE ALSO SIGN KEEP OUT. TURN LEFT, FOLLOW BLAZED TRAIL TO STATION. ABOUT 95 YARDS.

STATION RECOVERY (1933)

RECOVERY NOTE BY COAST AND GEODETIC SURVEY 1933 (RDH)
STATION IS ON THE PINE COVERED HILL ABOUT 2-1/2 MILES E OF ODENTON ON THE PROPERTY OWNED BY MR. JAMES WOODWARD AND BEFORE HIM BY MR. WEBB.
ABOUT 1/4 MILE N OF THE OLD WEBB HOME, NOW REPLACED BY A NEW HOUSE, PRESENT OWNER HARRY G. PAPPAS, WHO LIVES AND HAS BUSINESS INTERESTS IN ACADEMY JUNCTION OF THE WASHINGTON, BALTIMORE, AND ANNAPOLIS RAILROAD. SUBSURFACE MARK A CONE BURIED 1.7 FEET BELOW THE SURFACE WAS RECOVERED AND A TRIANGULATION MARK CEMENTED INTO THIS CONE BY MEANS OF A PLUMBING BENCH AND A SURFACE MARK WAS ALSO SET BEING SEPARATED FROM THE SUBSURFACE MARK AND PLUMBED OVER THE SUBSURFACE MARK.

THREE OF THE OLD REFERENCES WERE RECOVERED WHICH ARE GRANITE POSTS 6 INCHES SQUARE WITH A CROSS THROUGH THE CENTER. THE DISTANCES WERE MEASURED AND CHECKED CLOSELY TO THE ORIGINAL DISTANCES EXCEPT THE E REFERENCE WHICH DISAGREED BY 0.15 FOOT. THREE NEW MARKS WERE SET AND WILL BE DESCRIBED BELOW.

STATION IS ON THE E SIDE OF THE KNOLL NEAR THE TOP AND BY A TREE NOW CUT DOWN TO PERMIT THE BUILDING OF THE SIGNAL, WHICH WAS USED AS A FIRE WARDENS OBSERVING POST. THE STUMP OF THIS TREE IS STILL IN PLACE AND CAN BE IDENTIFIED BY TWO LARGE NAILS WHICH WERE DRIVEN INTO IT AND ARE NOW EXPOSED.

THE GRANITE POST REFERENCES WERE MEASURED AS FOLLOWS--N REFERENCE MARK 5.15 FEET. E REFERENCE MARK 4.95 FEET. S REFERENCE MARK 5.00 FEET.

THE NEW MARKS ARE STAMPED WEBB 1933.

REFERENCE MARK NO. 1 IS 76.90 FEET SE OF THE STATION ON THE SLOPE OF THE HILL TO THE S.

REFERENCE MARK NO. 3 IS 73.90 FEET W OF THE STATION ON THE SLOPE OF THE HILL TO THE W.

REFERENCE MARK NO. 2 IS 0.25 MILE W OF THE STATION ON THE W SIDE OF THE ROAD AT POINT OPPOSITE ROAD LEADING TO A HOUSE WHICH HAS TWO NEWSPAPER DELIVERY HOLDERS AT THE ENTRANCE TO THIS ROAD 20 FEET W OF THE CENTER LINE OF THE ROAD AND 6 FEET S OF A TELEPHONE POLE.
THIS MARK IS NOT VISIBLE FROM THE GROUND AT THE STATION BUT WAS PUT IN A PLACE SUCH THAT THE CLEARING TO THIS MARK WOULD BE THE LEAST AMOUNT POSSIBLE AND STILL HAVE THE MARK SET IN THE MOST IDEAL PLACE.

TO REACH THIS STATION GO N ON THE BALTIMORE ROAD FROM THE JUNCTION WITH ROUTE 50 3-1/2 MILES W OF ANNAPOLIS AND GO FOR 7.0 MILES TO SERVERN CROSSROADS AND TURN LEFT AND GO 0.5 MILE TO A FORKS AND TAKE THE RIGHT FORK TO MILLERSVILLE. FROM MILLERSVILLE GO 1.2 MILES TO THE NAVAL ACADEMY DAIRY ON THE LEFT, CONTINUE FOR 1.2 MILES TO A SIDE ROAD AND TURN RIGHT AND GO 0.1 MILE TO THE SAPPINGTON RAILROAD STATION, CROSS TRACKS TURN RIGHT GO 0.1 MILE TURN LEFT AND GO 0.5 MILE TO HOUSE WITH TWO BIRD HOUSES IN THE YARD ON POLES AND TURN LEFT. CONTINUE 0.3 MILES TO YELLOW HOUSE ON THE LEFT AND VACANT HOUSE ON THE RIGHT CONTINUE 0.3 MILE TURN RIGHT AT A BLAZED OAK TREE AND FOLLOW WOOD ROAD FOR 0.20 MILE TO THE STATION.

THE STATION AND TWO REFERENCE MARKS WERE RECOVERED AS DESCRIBED AND ARE IN GOOD CONDITION. REFERENCE MARK NO. 2 (AZIMUTH MARK) WAS FOUND LOOSE AND RESET 15 FEET S OF THE TELEPHONE POLE. THE ORIGINAL SETTING WAS 6 FEET S OF THE TELEPHONE POLE. THE THREE GRANITE POSTS REFERENCES COULD NOT BE FOUND. A COMPLETE NEW DESCRIPTION FOLLOWS--

THE STATION LOCATED ON A PINE COVERED HILL ABOUT 2.5 MILES E OF THE TOWN OF ODENTON, ON PROPERTY OWNED BY B.D. CONSTANT. IT IS STAMPED WEBB 1850.

JV5810'REFERENCE MARK NO. 1 IS SE OF THE STATION. IT IS STAMPED WEBB NO. 1 1933 AND PROJECTS ABOUT 12 INCHES.

REFERENCE MARK NO. 3 IS W OF THE STATION AND ABOUT 4 FEET BELOW THE ELEVATION OF THE STATION MARK. IT IS STAMPED WEBB NO. 3 1933 AND PROJECTS ABOUT 12 INCHES.

REFERENCE MARK NO. 2 (AZIMUTH MARK) IS 0.25 MILE SW OF THE STATION AT A POINT OPPOSITE A ROAD LEADING TO A HOUSE. IT IS 15 FEET S OF A TELEPHONE POLE, 20 FEET W OF THE CENTER OF A MACADAM ROAD. IT IS NOT VISIBLE FROM THE GROUND AND SOME CLEARING WILL BE NECESSARY.
IT IS STAMPED WEBB 1942 AND PROJECTS ABOUT 5 INCHES.

TO REACH THE STATION FROM THE JUNCTION OF STATE HIGHWAYS 180 AND 179 E OF CAMP MEADE AND E OF A OVERPASS, GO E ON STATE HIGHWAY 180 FOR 0.9 MILE TO A FORKS. TAKE LEFT FORK (GRAVEL) AND GO 0.6 MILE. TURN LEFT ON A MACADAM ROAD AND GO 0.4 MILE TO REFERENCE MARK NO. 2
(AZIMUTH MARK) ON THE LEFT. CONTINUE STRAIGHT AHEAD FOR 0.2 MILE TO A DIRT ROAD RIGHT. TURN RIGHT AND GO ABOUT 50 FEET TO A DIM ROAD LEFT WHICH PASSES TO THE LEFT OF SMALL COTTAGE. CONTINUE ON THIS DIM ROAD FOR 0.2 MILE, PASSING AN OLD SAWMILL SITE, TO THE STATION.

A 24-FOOT TOWER WILL SEE AN 87-FOOT LIGHT AT STATION STATION 300 1933.

A 103-FOOT TOWER WILL SEE A 100-FOOT LIGHT AT STATION JONESTOWN.

A 103-FOOT TOWER WILL SEE A 100-FOOT LIGHT AT STATION GUILFORD.

A 103-FOOT TOWER WILL SEE A 110-FOOT LIGHT AT STATION SHIPLEY 1933.

A 64-FOOT TOWER WILL SEE A 100-FOOT LIGHT AT STATION PATUX.

A 64-FOOT TOWER WILL SEE AN 87-FOOT LIGHT AT STATION PRINCE.

A 103-FOOT TOWER WILL SEE A 113-FOOT LIGHT AT STATION STABLER 1869.

A 103-FOOT TOWER WILL SEE A 113-FOOT LIGHT AT STATION MANNING 1933.

A 103-FOOT TOWER WILL SEE A 100-FOOT LIGHT AT STATION WHITE MARSH 1933.

RECOVERED AS DESCRIBED. DWELLING OF A MR. CONSTANT BEARS S. 53 DEG W. (MAG.) ABOUT 600 FEET. AZIMUTH MARK (REFERENCE MARK 2) WAS ALSO FOUND IN GOOD ORDER.

THE STATION WAS RECOVERED AND ALL MARKS WERE FOUND TO BE IN GOOD CONDITION, EXCEPT THE AZIMUTH MARK (R.M.NO.2) WHICH HAS BEEN DESTROYED AND A NEW AZIMUTH MARK WAS ESTABLISHED.

AZIMUTH MARK IS 17-1/2 FEET WEST-NORTHWEST OF THE APPROXIMATE CENTER LINE OF ROAD, 16 FEET SOUTH-SOUTHEAST OF UTILITY POLE AND 1-1/2 FEET EAST-NORTHEAST OF WITNESS POST. THE MARK PROJECTS ABOUT 6 INCHES AND THE DISK IS STAMPED WEBB 1957.

THE DISTANCE AND DIRECTIONS TO THE MARKS WERE CHECKED AND FOUND TO BE CORRECT.

THE ORIGINAL DESCRIPTION IS ADEQUATE. A NEW TO REACH FOLLOWS.

TO REACH THE STATION FROM THE JUNCTION OF STATE HIGHWAYS 175 AND 170 AT THE TRAFFIC LIGHT IN ODENTON. GO EAST ON STATE HIGHWAY 175 FOR 1.35 MILES TO THE ARUNDEL HIGH SCHOOL ON THE RIGHT, CONTINUE EAST ON STATE HIGHWAY 75 FOR 0.45 MILE TO SIDE ROAD LEFT. TURN SHARP LEFT AND GO NORTHELY FOR 0.8 MILES TO CROSSROADS, CONTINUE STRAIGHT AHEAD FOR 0.55 MILE TO SIDE ROAD RIGHT. (TO REACH THE AZIMUTH MARK FROM THIS POINT CONTINUE STRAIGHT AHEAD FOR 0.1 MILE TO AZIMUTH MARK ON LEFT.) TURN RIGHT FOR 0.05 MILE TO A DIM TRACK ROAD JUST BEFORE REACHING HOUSE, TURN LEFT AND FOLLOW DIM WOODS ROAD FOR 0.25 MILE TO THE STATION AS DESCRIBED.

MAIN STATION SURFACE MARK IS NOW A STANDARD USCGS TRIANGULATION DISK SET IN ROUND CONCRERE ON A CIRCULAR MOUND ABOUT 10-12 FEET IN DIAMETER, WHICH WOULD COVER THE ORIGINAL REFERENCE STONES.
