The Gail Borden Public Library is named for Gail Borden, the inventor of condensed milk. Interestingly, Gail Borden was never a resident of Elgin and had no personal connection to the library. His wife was a former resident of Elgin, and he decided to set up his condensed milk company here. The stepsons of Gail Borden purchased and donated a building in 1892 for the city to use as a library, simply asking that the library be known as the Gail Borden Public Library.
The present location, 270 N Grove Avenue, was completed in 2003, north of its former location. The library is situated on the Fox River, with seating that looks out on the river. The library also features free wireless internet access and a computer lab. The DVD section continues to expand, and with week-long checkout periods, offers a free alternative to video rental stores.
During the winter of 2004, the library hosted a dinosaur exhibit complete with a skeleton that rose two stories at the central staircase.
Operating hours are 9AM-9PM Mon-Thu, 9AM-5:30PM Fri and Sat, and Sundays (Sept-May only) 1PM-5:30PM.
