George Calvert sold this land 1836, to Robert Clark, builder of the house, 1840. General Edward F. Beale, early surveyor and government agent in the Southwest, bought the estate, 1875. Presidents Grant and Cleveland were frequent visitors as was "Buffalo Bill" Cody. Grant's Arabian horses were kept on the land.
