The Peninsula Campaign was initiated by Union General George B. McClellan as an offensive operation to capture Richmond. Marching from the east, the Union army met heavy resistance at Seven Pines, about four mile east from this location. During the Battle of Seven Pines, General Robert E. Lee was appointed commander of the Confederate army, and his agressive tactics thwarted the Union attack.
Here a part of McClellan's army crossed the Chickahominy on May 23, 1862, advancing on Richmond. It was attacked by the Confederates at Seven Pines.
