HISTORY OF MONUMENT
Howick and Pakuranga First World War memorial

In 1920 construction began of a First World War memorial for the Howick and Pakuranga areas on Stockade Hill, Howick. The exact date of the unveiling ceremony is unknown, but was probably in 1921.
In 1935 the Howick Ex-servicemen's Club also erected a flagstaff on the hill.
For many years the obelisk served as the site for wreath-laying ceremonies only, but in 1961 for the first time the entire Anzac Day service was held on the hill.
On 25 May 2006, during an Anzac Day dawn ceremony a memorial plaque was unveiled on Stockade Hill, in memory of Reginald Judson VC, who had reputedly planted an oak tree there eighty years before.
