Knight Kuno of Brienz had the Ringgenberg castle built around 1230.
The village Rinkenwyl then received its present name Ringgenberg.
The castle was inhabited from 1240 until 1380. The Ringgenberg family enjoyed its finest era with Johannes (1291 - 1350), a skillful politician and famous minstrel, as well.
The present church was built into the castle ruins in 1670. The first clock was installed in 1718. In 1837 an organ was added on which Felix Mendelssohn played in 1847.
Currently the fortress walls are being restored.
Plans include a walkway up to the top of the former tower on the eastern side of the courtyard. The church is open daily. For more information see the website (sorry only in German)
