Join me on a journey across the Australian continent by the Indian-Pacific train. Our departure is Wednesday lunchtime from East Perth terminal and our first scheduled stop (apart from crossing other trains in loops) will be Kalgoorlie nine hours later. The next stop will be Cook along the world's longest straight stretch of railway. Next is Adelaide after which we have to backtrack some distance before resuming our eastward journey. Broken Hill is the next stop before our arrival at Sydney terminal at around morning tea time on Saturday. Three nights aboard a train with your own cabin...
On my trip, NR27, a General Electric derived locomotive, was in the lead all the way. But first we have to board the train at East Perth.
East Perth Terminal is a starting point for a number of long distance train and coach services in Western Australia. The terminal has a large waiting room and booking office as well as a small kiosk for snacks. Next to the standard gauge terminal is the suburban East Perth station which uses narrow gauge. Outside the terminal building stands a Midland Junction Workshops built steam locomotive S542.
Whilst a Wikipedia entry has been cited below (because of its greater detail), the Western Australian government entities TransPerth and TransWA control East Perth station.
