Pitt St., a 50-foot granite obelisk near the grave of Mary Washington, was erected by the women of the National Mary Washington Monument Association and dedicated in 1894 with President Grover Cleveland as the speaker. A monument was begun here in 1833, but it stood incomplete until battered to ruins during the War between the States. Virginia: A Guide To The Old Dominion 1940 |
Mary Ball Washington was the mother of George Washington. Today, the monument still stands as it did when the American Guide Series for Virginia was published. It is enclosed by a small cast-iron fence. Next to the monument is the Gordon family cemetery and behind the cemetery is the Mary Washington Meditation Rock where a mother prayed for the safety of her son and country during the Revolutionary War.
