The building was built by the heirs of the William B. Howard estate, whose family home stood on the site, and leased to the auto company. (This is an example of how drastically the area changed from exclusive residential to commercial at the turn of the century.) The building was designed by Ernest Walker, who previously spent years working in the offices of Henry Ives Cobb (a Chicago based architect who designed such structures as the Newberry Library, the building that is now Harry Caray's Restaurant and The Excalibur.)

From wikipedia:
"The Maxwell was a brand of automobiles manufactured in the United States of America from about 1904 to 1925. The present-day successor to the Maxwell company is Chrysler Group. The brand name of motor cars was started as the Maxwell-Briscoe Company of Tarrytown, New York."
