Stone chambers, stairs, walls, passageways, wells, drains, and platforms, using chunks and slabs up to 45 tons, show evidence of carved and chiseled work; It appears initially to be an encampment site for an ancient civilization - but as suggested by documentation and analysis, the 20-acre "habitat" in the middle of the site required massive effort and time to construct using primitive methods. The outer ring surrounding this encompasses 100 acres, and has been established as an accurate solar/lunar calendar corrected for the slow tilt of the earth. Whoever made this lived here for an extended period, possessed knowledge of stonework and astronomy, and needed a calendar for ceremonial and informational use. I recommend visiting when you can spend at least 2 hours - the self-guided tour uses a very specific and well-written text, and the details you will encounter (including a creepy "talking" stone sacrificial table) are worth the time. See their website for hours and admission. Bring a flashlight and bug spray.
