From 1787 through 1853, Hurkamp Park was a public cemetery known as the Corporation Burying Ground located in downtown Fredericksburg. By 1853, it had fallen into neglect and became abandoned and overgrown. In 1875, it was decided to clean up the eyesore and turn it into a park. The graves were moved to nearby cemeteries. With the financial help of John Hurkamp, a local businessman, the park was dedicated in 1881 and named for him.
Today, Hurkamp Park is the location of many activities and events -- outdoor concerts, farmer markets, fitness camps, craft shows, and holiday celebrations.
There are brick walkways lined with benches and lamp posts that meet at a water fountain in the center where you will also find two historic display signs and a WW II memorial nearby. A brick wall including brick benches stands along Prince Edward Street, thanks to a donation from the Rappahannock Rotary Club. It is possible to make a 'naming' donation and have a plaque added to this wall. Park benches and lamp posts are also dedicated for donations.
Hurkamp Park is open daily 5 AM - 10 PM.
