The marker reads: "Tribute to Pittsburgh's beloved writer of songs and ballads, including "Oh Suzanna," "Old Folks at Home," and "My Old Kentucky Home." Born in 1826 and died in 1864."

The memorial building itself was built between 1935 and 1937 and was designed by Charles Z. Klauder.
