The first battle of the War of 1812 on Ohio soil was fought here. About 60 citizen soldiers were attacked by about 130 Indians on September 29, 1812. Twenty men held off the Indians in a nearby cabin while the others escaped by boat to Cedar Point. Two days later reinforcements arrived, driving off the Indians. 40 Indians and 8 Americans were killed in the skirmish. Neither side had a clear victory.

The eight Americans are buried at the site. The monument was erected in 1857 by Joshua Giddings.
