"Right from Overland Park to the SITE OF VALLEY STATION, 3.8 m, an old stage station on the Leavenworth & Pikes Peak Express route."
--- Colorado: A Guide to the Highest State, 1941
The museum itself, opened in 1936, exhibits the lifestyle and hardships the pioneers endured while heading westward on the Oregon Trail. The Overland Trail stage route was a branch of the Oregon Trail that followed the south bank of the South Platte River through northeastern Colorado. It is believed that this route may have been the heaviest traveled road in America from 1862 to 1868.
The yard in front of the museum's building is the site of this historical marker reading:
"3.8 miles north

and Pike's Peak Express
