The design inspiration came from several visits the father and son made to the Chicago Century of Progress Exhibition in 1933-1934. Robert Sr. was also indirectly influenced by exposure to modern architecture and art in his home country of Czechoslovakia before immigrating to the United States. The Silhan House incorporates almost all of the high-style Art Moderne characteristics and is the strongest example of this architectural style of any single-family residence in Berwyn. It was also built with the same type of white-glazed block that was used for White Castle restaurants.

Some of the home’s features include a solarium with seven windows on the curved south side of the building and an unusual white ceramic brick exterior manufactured by the Tiffany Enamel Brick Company.

It really stands out on more traditional Cuyler Avenue!

Placed on the National Register of Historic Places in February 2007 - see waymark WM6YXV.
