40. Lexington’s City Hall
22 West Center Street
This is the site of the first known business
established to sell Lexington style barbecue
prepared under tents on an open pit. Barbecue was
first prepared for the people that were in town for
court and for farmers on Saturdays, and has since
grown into an industry that Lexington is widely
known for.
41. Former City Barbecue - ca. 1937
South Greensboro Alley
The City Barbecue building, originally called
Swicegood’s BBQ, stands as a permanent
reminder of the early days of barbecue, which
centered around the courthouse to feed the
increased number of people in town on court days.
The multi-colored patterned brickwork building with
its original concrete block barbecue pit on the
northeast rear corner still remains intact, but is now unoccupied.
