This bridge stands near the location of the old Potomac Creek Bridge which is also a Civil War Discovery Trail site. The original bridge carried the Richmond, Fredericksburg, and Potomac Railroad which ran between Richmond and the Potomac River. During the Civil War, it served as a major supply route for the Union army and was rebuilt 4 times. In 1899, the former bridge was abandoned and the railroad and bridge were shifted to their present-day location.
In 1991, the RF&P Railroad was purchased by CSX Transportation and merged into its system.
There is a county road which was once the railroad right-of-way that passes under the bridge before it crosses the creek.
