[FR] D'une légèreté remarquable, de plan pratiquement centré, c'est la rencontre des influences de la Normandie (tour lanterne, porche à cinq pans) et de la région parisienne (plan sans transept apparent, homogénéité des dimensions). Une partie des vitraux anciens a pu être préservée.
La flèche qui est représentée sur le Livre des Fontaines avait été élevée à partir de 1511. Elle était en bois recouvert de plomb. Ebranlée par un ouragan en 1706, il devait être démoli quelques années après. Pendant longtemps un petit clocher en forme d'éteignoir a coiffé la tour-lanterne. La flèche actuelle a été élevée en 1868 par l'architecte Barthélémy.
Durement touchée par les bombardements de 1944, l'église a failli disparaître. Les travaux de restauration ne sont pas terminés.
En juin 2007, la tour lanterne a pu enfin être offerte à la vue des visiteurs.
[EN] The St. Maclou Church is dedicated to a Breton Saint also known by the name Malo.
The façade is quite original in its design. It is arranged in the arc of a circle and is composed of a pyramid-like succession of triangular lines that give it it’s own special grace and charm.
The tympanum of the central portal shows a Last Judgment. The doors (mid-16th century) are exceptional and represent the Baptism of Christ (central portal), the Good Shepherd (north side portal) and the Virgin Mary (portal on the north arm of the transept). The interior architecture is dominated by vertical lines and is as sober as the façade is ornate.
Despite substantial damage during World War II, the church still has many elements of interest: a Flamboyant Gothic staircase that was built from the choir screen, a lovely Renaissance organ case supported by columns attributed to Jean Goujon (1541), an arch of glory and confessionals from the 18th century and 15th century stained glass and oak doors from the mid-16th century.
