Fabled hang-out of the rich and famous, it is easily accessible to the casual visitor for day trips or longer stays.
Avalon, with a permanent population of about 3,000, is the only incorporated town on Catalina Island. Most transportation to and from Avalon is via this pier. It is about and hour and a half trip to or from the mainland.
Althought the beaches are small and crowded, the atmosphere in the town is relaxed but festive. There are numerous tours and activities from inland tours to submarine cruises. The landmark Casino (not a gambling casino) features a theater with nearly perfect acoustics, and a ballroom on the second floor - an engineering marvel.
