Wasco County was created by proclamation of the Oregon Territorial Legislature and was approved by Congress on Jan. 11, 1854. As originally created it include 130,000 square miles and stretched from the Cascades to the Rocky Mountains and included parts of what are now Idaho, Montana, and Wyoming. It was the largest county in U.S. history. Excluding military posts, The Dalles was the only white settlement (35 permanent white residents) east of the Cascades so it became the county seat. (http://www.wasco-history.r9esd.k12.or.us/create.html) Over the years many additional counties were formed from lands within the original Wasco County, so that today the county only includes 2,395 square miles.
